The Christian Story Vol 4
Finding the Church in Church History
As the final volume of The Christian Story begins, we are entering the middle third of the eighteenth century. The First Great Awakening is about to occur, principally in the English colonies, in England itself, Wales and Scotland. These were the initial events that led to the Evangelical Movement. After the religious wars of the seventeenth century, Protestant and Catholic powers reached an equilibrium. However, there is still significant political and religious tension between the Protestant North and the Catholic South. Much of the tension between England and its rival France and Spain has Catholic/Protestant overtones even in the Americas. By the Eighteenth Century, the significant period of the spread of Christianity under the Roman Catholic powers has virtually ceased. The Protestant churches have still not made any significant missionary advances. This movement is destined to change dramatically.
The full spectrum of what makes Christianity today will appear in this volume. All of us can learn something, even from groups we disagree with. This final volume will cover:
• The First Great Awakening: Edwards, Whitefield, and Wesly — 1700-1780 AD
• Deism, Skepticism, Biblical Criticsim and the Christian Response — 1730-1800 AD
• The Second Great Awakening — 1800-1850 AD
* Protestantism becomes a Global Movement, Liberalism Advances —1850-1914 AD
• The Rise of Modern Christianity, Pentecostalism, Fundamentalism and the Evumenical Movement — 1914-2020 AD
